NOTE: These cranes were released with 8 Greater sandhill cranes to try to get the whooping cranes to integrate into the wild and migrate normally. RELEASE DATE: 1st day of migration. Arrived Oct 21. PRE-RELEASE TRAINING: other- trained to roost in water to reduce predation. SURROGATE PROCEDURE: Tried with Canada geese, then Sandhill cranes before whooping cranes. MAIN CAUSE OF DEATH: 1 killed by coyote, 1 by bobcat.
