Notes: What's This?
97 chicks were captured in total in the 2007 and 2008 translocations of the common diving petrel. 31 were captured on November 27, 2007, but only 29 were transferred; 39 were captured and transferred on November 13 2008; 27 were captured and transferred on November 21 2008. Some chicks were not taken because they weighed too small. 5 chicks were dead on arrival to Motuora Island (5/29 = 17.9%) in the November 2007 transfer, but no chicks died in transit in both 2008 events. Blockades were removed on an individual basis with the aim of preventing chicks from disappearing prematurely – this depended mostly on the chick’s weight and health. Once the blockades were removed, the chicks could fledge naturally (usually 1-3 days). 2 gates were removed on the same night of transfer for 2 chicks in 2007 and they fledged the next day. Removal of gates commenced the day after transfer in both November 2008 events. Release date, in all of these translocations, means the first day the blockades were removed. The range over which all the birds left in included in the notes.
