Birds were captured for translocation from this source site in 2004 and 2008. In 2004, 58 birds were caught between August 22-26th 2004. Transfer rook place the morning of August 27th, 2004. 3 birds died in the aviary before transfer: 1 on August 23rd from crashing upon an escape attempt during banding, another on August 24th that was found dead, and another found dead on the day of transfer. All whitehead deaths were female. Thus, 55/58 (94.8%) birds captured were transferred for release. In 2008, 93 birds were caught between April 13-20th 2008. Transfer took place on April 20th, 2008. 2 birds were re-released due to a faulty band and crusty belly skin (Total = 91 whiteheads for transfer). 50/91(55%) went to Cascade Kauri Park and the remainder to Motuora Island (see “Release Events”). Birds were health and disease screened only in 2008. But in all cases, Birds were mist-netted using lure calls in approved areas in the source site. They were then housed in a green aviary until the transfer date where they were caught using hand nets at 8:30AM.
